Physical Science Assignments

Unit Progress

Unit A - Investigtions in Physical Science

September =============================================================

10 Thursday:

  1. Watch the video on the metric system while Completing the accompanying handout,

  2. Review the answers to the six section review/challenge questions located on p 22,

  3. Review for Friday’s Exam over C1.

9 Wednesday:

  1. Watch a video on lab safety,

  2. Begin summarizing C1 in preparation for Friday’s Exam over C1.

8 Tuesday:

A-dayers build puzzles

Both A and B-dayers will:

    – team up with an opposite-dayer to form a tech-team,

    – work as a tech-team to form a line-art logo for your team,

    – read chapter 1 section 4 (pp 17-22) in the textbook for this class, and by Good
Answer Form answering the six section review/challenge questions located on p 22.

In previous classes we have done the following:

  1. Introduction to the webpage for Clarksville Science and were given a presentation on “What is physical science?”.

  2. After the presentation  we learned about making good hypotheses and made one before going outside to gain experience in launching water bottle rockets.

  3. We read chapter 1§1 (pp 4-8) in the textbook for this class, and after learning about good answer form, answered (using good answer form) the four section review/challenge questions located on p 8.

  4. In class, we went through the answers to the four section review/challenge questions located on p 8 and found out about an easy way to remember why people study physical science.

  5. We learned about making a Good Graph and made one to get a better answer to the question about what amount of water is best to make the water rockets we launched go highest.

  6. In class, we learned about lab safety by:
    - reading chapter 1 section 2 (pp 9-10) in the textbook for this class,
    - answering the three section review/challenge questions located on p 10
    - watching a video on lab safety
    - observing and practicing good safety behaviors in class

  7. And in class, we built puzzles to practice inferencing, and we learned about solving problems using a scientific method called SHEAR. The SHEAR allowed us to better understand Gizmos, as well as to determine not just whether soda pop or water made a better fuel for the RoKits we used in class, but also why!

  8. We learned more about solving problems scientifically by reading chapter 1 section 3 (pp 11-15) in the textbook for this class, and by answering the three section review/challenge questions located on p 15 (both on our own and in class).

So in summary, you should by now be able to...

+ State the three criteria needed in a Good Answer Form response

+ Give Good Answer Form responses to each of the following questions:

1.1a What is physical science?

1.1b Why should you study physical science?

1.1c How can you benefit from physical science?
1.2a What safety rules should you follow in the laboratory?
1.2b What should you do in case of an accident in the laboratory?

1.3a How are problems solved scientifically?

1.3b How is scientific knowledge revised?

+ State (in order) the five steps of the SHEAR version of the scientific method.

+ State the two criteria needed in a Helpful Hypothesis.

+ Give Good Answer Form responses to each of the following questions:

1.3a How are problems solved scientifically?

1.3b How is scientific knowledge revised?

1.4a How is the metric system used?
1.4b How are mass and volume measured?

1.4c How is density measured?

1.4d What are the limits of measurement?

1.4e How do scientists keep track of very large or very small numbers?
